Barn Fire

Monday, November 16, 2009: This evening members were alerted at 2335 Hours to assist on the barn fire in Quincy Township, with the engine tanker. Engine tanker 18 responded and arrived on the scene to supply two loads of water. After staging for a short period of time command placed Engine tanker 18, and most other tankers in service at 0159. During this time Engine 18-1 handled a transfer to Station 4 and was realeased at 0217.

House Fire

Friday, November 14, 2009: This evening members were alerted with Station 4 and other area departments, to 2154 Sollenberger Rd. for a house fire. Company 18 responded with both engines. Engine 18-1 arrived and dropped off man power and went to set up a water supply. Crews on the scene assisted with overhaul. Engine 18-1 was directed to break down the water supply, and return to the scene. Engine 18-1 cleared the scene at 0236 Hrs.

Minor MVA

Thursday, November 12, 2009: This afternoon members were dispatched at 1428 hrs. to the 5000 block of Lincoln Way West for the auto accident. Engine 18-2 and Ambulance 18-9 arrived and found two vehicles off the road way. Engine crew checked for leaks, and EMS obtained two refusals. Company 18 units cleared at 1446.

 

 

 

Chambersburg Veteran's Day Parade

Wednesday, November 11, 2009: This morning members attended the Annual Chambersburg Veterans Day Parade.  A crew on Engine 18-1 attended the parade and then returned to St. Thomas.

 

 

Vera Bradley & Longaberger Bingo

Sunday, November 8, 2009: Today St. Thomas Township Fire & Rescue Co. Social hall was packed full of people all here in hopes of going home with a Vera Bradley Bag or a Longaberger Basket. A meal was provided by the company for all those in attendance. A good time was had by many.  After 25 games of bingo, the afternoon was complete. This fundraiser was a huge success and we are hoping on doing more in the future.  Additional Pictures will be coming soon.

Six Members Complete Fire Ground Support Class

Saturday, November 7, 2009: Today six members completed the last day of the Fire Ground Support Class being taught at the Franklin County Public Safety Training Center. This class was taught by Clyde Thomas, and a team of instructors from the area. On Saturday, The engine went to the center to provide additional equipment for the practical testing. At the end of the class the following members passed from St. Thomas Township Fire & Rescue Co.   K. Daymude, K. Ricker, K. Straley, M. Straley Jr., D. Wright, S. Wright. Again Congratulations to all.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Members took part in Halloween Parade  

Monday, November 2, 2009: Tonight members took part in the annual Halloween Parade held in Mercersburg. Members took Engine 18-1 and Ambulance 18-9 and headed to Mercersburg. After the parade members stopped by Company 9 to enjoy some very good food, that was prepared by the members of M.M.P.& W.  All had a good evening and returned to St. Thomas about 1015 pm.

 

 

 

Search Detail with Station 4

Friday, October 30, 2009: Tonight around 10pm station 4 was alerted for a search on the Letterkenny Rd. Around 2330 Hours Command requested Company 18. Crews obtained ATV's and gathered up some personnel. Company 18 responded and arrived and assisted through the night on a search for a 3 year old child. The child was found shortly after 9 am on the 31st. Company 18 provided  5 atv's for the search along with 16 personnel. A great job was done by all agencies involved.

Engine Transfer to Station 4

Sunday, October 25, 2009: This morning crews were alerted at 0412 for an engine transfer to Station 4 while there members were committed on a first due house fire. Engine 18-1 was later released at 0607 hours.  

 

 

 

Busy day for the 18 house

Monday, October 19, 2009: Today started early and ended late. After the MVA at 0552 in the morning. Members were back at the station, when communications sounded box 9-05 for the barn fire at 1241 Hrs. Engine Tanker 18 and Engine 18-2 were sent to the scene of the barn fire at 1858 Furnace Rd.  Units arrived on the scene with a working fire. Units arrived and manpower was sent to the scene and units hauled water for the next several hours.  Company 18 units provided over 38,000 gallons of water to the fire ground. After a long day units were released. Company 18 units returned to the station at 2013 Hrs.  Thanks to all transfers thru out the day.  Engine 17-2, Engine 1-4, &  Engine Tanker 14

 

 

  

 

While units were cleaning up equipment after the barn fire, Engine Tanker 18 was dispatched non emergency to 14163 Blairs Valley Rd. for an ordinance Violation per Chief 9. Engine Tanker 18 arrived and was advised by Chief 9 to stage in the area and fill brush trucks. Engine Tanker 18 provided another load of water, and refilled and was placed available at 2344 Hrs.  While the engine tanker was on this incident, Engine 18-1 handled a transfer to Company 9. While those two units were committed Engine 18-2 was dispatched at 2314 hrs. to 3489 Crottlestown Rd. for an odor in the residence, Engine 18-2 was placed in service while responding, and was available at 2326 Hrs.  All units returned to the station by 0030 Hrs. just in time to handle a BLS call, to end the day of 6 calls.

Early Morning MVA

Monday, October 19, 2009: This morning again like many others started early for members. Communications dispatched Company 18 and Medic 118 to the intersection of Edenville Cheesetown & Criders Church Rd. for an auto accident. While units were responding Hamilton Township units arrived and confirmed one auto that over turned and now back on its wheels, with a single occupant out of the vehicle.  Medic 118 & Ambulance 18-9 arrived and began to treat the single occupant. Engine 18-2 arrived and checked for leaks and other hazards. EMS transported one class 3 to Chambersburg Hospital, and the engine company returned available at 0620 Hrs.

 

 

2nd Due House Fire

Sunday, October 18, 2009: This morning again was an early start for the members. At 0536 Communications sounded box 9-06 for the reported dwelling fire at 589 Path Valley Rd. As units were responding communications reported a working fire. An officer from Co. 9 arrived and advised the first unit to investigate the interior, once we got a report that the fire may be out. Engine Tanker 18 arriving and assuming the first due position, pulled an attack line, and made access to the residence from side B to the reported fire room. Found small areas to be smoldering and a heavy smoke condition. The occupant had put most of the fire out with a garden hose prior to the fire departments arrival. Shortly after confirming no extension, command 9 held Engine Co. 9, 18, & Squad 41. After some overhaul was complete command placed the rest of the box in service. Company 18 units returned to service at 0656. Thanks to station 4 for the transfer.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Kayelynn Celebrates Sweet 16

Saturday, October 17, 2009: This evening, after taking in 4 calls thru out the day, the social hall, then became the location of the "sweet 16" party for junior member Kayelynn Ricker. Kayelynn turned 16 on October 5, 2009, however had the party planned for this weekend. The party was attended by members and friends. Everyone had an enjoyable time, and again we would like to wish her a happy birthday.

 

  

 

Another 4 runs for the day

 

Saturday, October 17, 2009:  Today members took in another 4 runs for the day. First thing this morning, Company 18 was dispatched to 2300 Appleway Rd. for an automatic fire alarm. Chief 18 placed units in service while responding.  Then at 1236 hours, Communications sent Engine 18-1 to Station 4 while they handled 2 separate incidents.

While engine 18-1 was at Station 4, Company 18 was dispatched for the first due chimney fire at 7370 Lincoln Way West at 1346 hours. Engine 18-2 arrived on the scene and crews went to investigate. Engine 18-1 arrived and manpower assisted, with interior and roof operations. Command held Company 18 and Squad 41. Squad 41 arrived and manpower staged. After a short time, Chief 18 held Company 18 and placed the squad 41 in service. Crews wrapped up operations and command placed units in service.  Later in the evening at 1828 Engine 18-1 ran a medical local, to assist the ambulance with forcible entry.

 

  

 

 

3 Calls make an early start for the day

 

Thursday, October 15, 2009:  This morning at 0530 hours, Franklin County Communications sound the possible commercial building fire in Station 4's area. Engine Co. 18 was alerted to 534 Warmspring Rd. Command 44 held Station 4 and placed the remainder of the box in service as units were arriving.  Then at 0750 Hours A/C Bigler received a call advising a fuel spill in the area of the station. Members were advised and found a spill at the intersection of Lincoln Way West & School House Rd. The fuel, was also found to be running in drains in the area. HAZ MAT 28 was notified and crews contacted  St. Thomas Township and between both agencies area drains were covered and absorbent pads were applied to the area. Thanks to St. Thomas Township for their assistance.  Later in the afternoon, Company 18 was dispatched to 9121 Apple Jack Ct. with Company 9, for the oven fire. Engine Tanker 18 was placed available by Chief 9 before arriving on the scene.

Auto Accident

 

Friday, October 10, 2009: At 1213 Hours as members were in the middle of fire prevention activities at the St. Thomas Elementary School, Communications sounded rescue box 18-4 for the auto accident reported with entrapment. Engine 18-2 and Ambulance 18-9 responded. Amb. 18-9 arrived and advised two vehicle no entrapment. The engine company arrived and assisted EMS. A second ambulance was started and the engine crew took care of a fluid leak. EMS transported one patient and the engine company returned to service at 1304 after assisting the towing service.

 

          

 

 

Engine Transfer to Company 17

 

Wednesday, October 7, 2009:  At 0612 Hours the Communications center alerted Engine 18-1 to transfer to Company 17. Crews stood by until realeased by company 17 at 0921. No incidents handled.

 

 

 

Engine Transfer to Washington County Co. 13

 

Saturday, October 3, 2009: A crew headed with engine 18-1 to Maugansville, Saturday morning to stand by while they attended a gun drawing. The crew was standing by from 0800 and returned to St. Thomas around 1900. The crew handled 3 calls while on stand by. Two MVA's on the interstate, and an outside investigation on Broadfording Road. Both accidents were on the Interstate and were both minor. The investigation was found to be a control burn.

Engine Tanker 18 on the 15-1 Box

 

Saturday, September 26, 2009: While Engine Tanker 18 was in the Shippensburg Area finishing up from the water supply class, Communications sounded box 15-1 for the reported building fire at  J&D Equipment, 414 Rowe Rd. at 1529 hours. Deputy Chief 15 (Cleck) requested Engine Tanker 18 be added to the assignment. Engine Tanker 18 responded. Upon arrival was advised to stage. Engine Tanker 18 staged until placed in service by command 15 at 1546 hours.

 

 

 

Rural Water Movement Class

 

Saturday, September 26, 2009: Members left the station around 0700 Hrs. to head to Shippensburg, with the Engine Tanker. Engine Tanker 18 was requested to assist with the rural water movement class being hosted by the West End Fire & Rescue Co.  The tanker and crew assisted with the class thru out the day and returned to the St. Thomas area around 1630 hours.

 

           

           

 

 

Daystar Dinner / Concert

 

Friday, September 25, 2009:  Members worked most of the day on Friday to prepare a meal for the Dinner / Concert being held at the station on Friday evening. A meal was served and a good time was had by all in attendance. We would like to thank all supporters who came out to support the company. A special thanks to the group Daystar for the wonderful evening.

 

  

 

Fire Police to Assist in Chambersburg

 

Friday, September 25, 2009: While members were preparing a meal for the concert, Company 18 fire police were dispatched  around 1430 hours to assist Company 1 fire police with other area departments with traffic control in the area of Wayne Ave & Orchard Dr. Fire Police 18 responded and arrived and was given an assignment to set up at Wayne & Stouffer. Company 18 fire police returned to service around 2130 hours.

 

  

 

 

Donation Presentation

 

Thursday, September 24, 2009: Chief Straley and Assistant Chief McNew attended the Mt. Parnell Lions Club monthly meeting which was held at the Foot of the Mountain Restaurant. After a delicious home made meal the meeting was underway.  A presentation was given by both officers on the fire company and the progress thru out the year. The Mt. Parnell lions club presented Chief Straley with a donation check for the assistance of the fire company members at the Lions Club Ox Roast, held in June.  Again the St. Thomas Fire & Rescue Co. would like to thank the Lions Club for all they have done for the company.

Outside Investigation

 

Friday, September 18, 2009: At 2343 hours Communications dispatched Company 18 to the 5100 Block of Lincoln Way West for an outside investigation of fire. While responding Duty 18 was advised this was to be a recreational fire.  Duty 18 advised Engine 18-1 to proceed in non emergency. Units arrived and found a 40 X 20 area to be involved. There was old building materials, and other items along with brush involved. Command 18 had the engine and Brush place a line in service, and put out the fire. Company 18 units returned to service at 0058.

 

  

 

 

Building Fire

 

Monday, September 14, 2009:  As members were finishing up the monthly membership meeting Company 18 units were dispatched to the Boro of Mercersburg on Oregon St. for the reported barn fire. While responding units were advised this was going to be a building fire. Engine 18-1 and Engine 18-2 was advised to stage in the stagging area until given an assignment. Engine Tanker 18 was to access the incident from a different location and prepare to set up a water supply for Truck 42. Engine 18-1 then was advised to lay out to Engine Tanker 9 who was already back the lane. Engine 18-1 layed 1200' of supply line and was about 400' short of Engine tanker 9. Crews pulled the additional off Engine Tanker 9. Truck 42 arrived and Engine tanker 18 layed an additional 500' of supply line form the other side of the incident. Truck 42 was set up for ladder pipe operations and operated for about an hour.  Command 9 then placed units in service. Thanks to all personell who assited in wrapping up 1700' of supply line.  Also thanks to station 4 for handling the transfer to Co. 18.

Cumberland County Vol. Firefighters Convention/ Cumberland Valley Hose Co. #2 Shippensburg                         150th Anniversary

Saturday, September  12, 2009: Members traveled to Shippensburg to attend the 82nd annual Cumberland County Volunteer  firefighters Association Parade hosted by Cumberland Valley Hose Co. # 2 of Shippensburg, who is also celebrating 150 Years of Service to the Shippensburg Community.  Engine 18-1, Brush 18 and Ambulance 18-9 attended the parade.  After the parade concluded at the Shippensburg township Park on Britton Rd, members enjoyed some refreshments, and music. Company 18 units left the parade due to other events scheduled this evening.  We have received word that company 18 brought home the following awards.

AUTO ACCIDENT / ROLLOVER

 

Friday, September 11, 2009: At 1327 Hrs.  Company 18 units were dispatched to 3562 Leafmore Rd. for an auto accident. While units were responding we were advised Chief 14 was on the scene and advised one auto overturned and patient out of the vehicle. Amb. 18-9 arrived and confirmed dispatch. Engine 18-2 arrived and checked for fluids. Patient was self extricated and EMS obtained a refusal. Engine company stood by to assist the towing company and returned available at 1427.

 

     

 

 

TRAINING ON THE NEW HURST STSTEM

 

Wednesday, September 9, 2009: Members spent the evening at St. Thomas Towing to conduct a company drill. The topic was on the new hurst system that was recently purchased. After a few hours of doing different task the drill was completed. Members will continue to train on the system which will be placed on Engine 18-2 in the near future.

 

     

 

 

 

CHAMBERSBURG FIREMANS MUSEUM TOUR

 

Saturday, September 5, 2009: Today members traveled into Chambersburg to take a tour of the Chambersburg Volunteer Firemans Museum. Larry Miley Sr. from the Goodwill Fire Company was the tour guide for the event. Many members got to see alot of fire department history in a town so close. The tour was enjoyed by everyone that attended. Again thanks to Larry Miley Sr. for the tour.

 

    

  

 

 

EARLY MORNING ACCIDENT W/ ENTRAPMENT

 

Saturday, September 5,2009:  Members had an early start to the holiday weekend. At 0354 units were dispatched to the intersection of Lincoln Way West and Apple Way Rd. for an auto accident with entrapment. Units were advised while responding that they had one vehicle off the road way and had one occupant still trapped in the vehicle. Chief 18 (Straley) arrived on location and confirmed dispatch. Ambulance 18-9 arrived and began to triage the patient. Engine 18-2 arrived and crews worked to free the victim. Patient was transported to a near by field and then air lifted to Hersey Medical Center. Company 18 provided lighting for PSP and towing services and returned to service at 0507.

NEW TOOL IN TOWN

 

The St. Thomas Township Fire & Rescue Co. Relief recently made the purchase of a new Hurst Rescue System. This units includes a trimo pump, cutters, spreaders and a combination tool, along with new hoses. This units will be placed in service shortly after some training on the units. We would like to thank the relief association for the new purchase. Also a big thanks goes out to the St. Thomas Ruitan for the  purshase on the currently used tool from 1996. This tool has been a great asset to the department. 

 

 

 

 

FIRECOM SYSTEM PLACED IN SERVICE

 

 Over the last few weeks, Wright Communications was on station to install the fire com system on both engines and the engine tanker. This project was made possible by the State Grant. Thanks to all involved in preparing this grant.  

 

 

 

 

OFFICE CONSTRUCTION NEARS COMPLETION

 

 Over the past few weeks there has been some construction being done to the interior of the building. Two offices have been put in the large day room. Along with a new equipment storage facility. The offices will house the Fire Chief and another office for the West Shore Staff Medic.
